TMD & Tooth Wear

What is TMD?

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) describes a range of conditions affecting the jaw joint, surrounding muscles, and bite mechanics. Patients often first notice a popping or clicking sound near the ear, jaw soreness when opening wide, or an inability to fully open the mouth. In some cases, temporal headaches that spread across the face or neck may also occur.

A comprehensive exam at Audubon Dental includes an assessment of jaw range of motion, muscle coordination and tonicity, and pain levels to identify any underlying TMD concerns early.

Tooth Wear

Tooth wear is one of the most common and often overlooked dental concerns. Over time, the surface of teeth can break down due to grinding, clenching, acid erosion, or improper bite alignment. Left untreated, wear can compromise both the function and appearance of your smile.

At Audubon Dental, we evaluate the degree of tooth wear and develop a treatment approach tailored to your specific needs — whether that means a protective appliance, bite adjustment, or restorative care.

Anterior Guidance

Proper anterior guidance plays a critical role in protecting teeth from excessive wear. Watch the video below to learn more about how bite mechanics affect long-term dental health.
